20 Billion Served

Today Akismet caught its 20 billionth spam.

That’s an average of around 10 million per day over the 5 years since Akismet first launched. Currently we deal with 30 million spam comments on a typical day, or about 350 per second.

To put that in perspective: if Akismet users had to spend one second manually deleting each of those comments, it would have taken over 600 years to moderate them all. (And each new day’s flood of spam would add another year to the queue).

How much time has Akismet saved you? :)

  2. “Akismet has protected your site from 2,163 spam comments already, but there’s nothing in your spam queue at the moment.”

Thank you so much! I don’t know how I would cope with spam without you. I’m getting more than 20 per day now, and it’s getting worse and worse, so you’re more and more useful to me.

  4. It may not have taken me 600 years to delete all my spam but, heck, before using Akismet there were many days when, three times a day (or more!) I’d be deleting 50 (or more) spam messages. Thank the gods for Akismet.

  5. Wow, those are some phenomenal statistics!

Must be very humbling to see what an impact the development of Akismet has made – I personally over atleast 20 sites and it saves a great deal of pain!

    Three cheers, gents!

Also… is there really a plural form of “spam” called “spams”?

  7. Congratulations Akismet team. I just reviewed more spam that Akismet caught before it hit my comments and was looking for somewhere to post a big thanks to you guys. This looks like a perfect thread. Keep up the great work!
